How to Style a Kaftan for Every Occasion in the UAE

By Amina Bouchibaa, Founder & Creative Director, Maison Arabelle

The kaftan is one of the most versatile garments in the Arab world — and yet it is consistently misunderstood by those who have not grown up wearing one. In the UAE specifically, where the social calendar moves from intimate family gatherings to formal wedding celebrations to afternoon coffee in Jumeirah, the kaftan is not a single-occasion piece. It is a wardrobe anchor, capable of moving through an entire day — or an entire season — with nothing more than a change of jewellery and a shift in posture.

At Maison Arabelle, we have dressed women across the Gulf for five years. We have seen our kaftans worn at katb kitab ceremonies in Abu Dhabi, at rooftop brunches in Dubai Marina, and at quiet Eid mornings in family homes across Algeria and Tunisia. What we have learned is that the occasion does not change the garment — it changes how you carry it.

This guide is for every woman who has stood in front of a kaftan and wondered whether it was right for where she was going. It is.

The Kaftan in the UAE: A Cultural Context

Before styling, context matters.

The UAE is a country where modest dressing is both a cultural norm and a personal expression of identity. The kaftan — a floor-length, flowing garment with roots in the Ottoman Empire and wide adoption across North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula — sits at the intersection of modesty and elegance in a way that no other silhouette quite manages.

In Dubai specifically, the kaftan occupies a unique social position. It is worn by Emirati women at formal occasions, by Arab expatriates at family celebrations, and increasingly by international women who have discovered that a well-cut kaftan in Korean silk is one of the most comfortable and flattering things they can put on their body. It has crossed from cultural garment to luxury fashion item — not because it changed, but because the world caught up to what Arab women already knew.

Occasion 1: The Wedding & Katb Kitab Ceremony

What the occasion demands: Formality, colour, presence. In the UAE and across the Arab world, weddings are among the most dressed occasions in the social calendar. A katb kitab — the Islamic marriage contract signing ceremony — is typically more intimate than the wedding celebration itself, but no less considered in terms of dress.

How to style it: For a wedding or katb kitab, reach for a kaftan with hand embroidery and a structured silhouette. The embroidery detail does the work that Western formalwear achieves through cut — it signals occasion, effort, and intention.

The Hajar Lilac Abaya by Maison Arabelle is built precisely for this moment. Its lilac tone — a colour that reads as celebratory without competing with the bride — combined with hand-embroidered detailing makes it a natural choice for formal Arab celebrations. Worn with gold jewellery and pointed mules, it achieves the level of formality a wedding demands without the rigidity of structured Western eveningwear.

Styling notes:

  • Pair with layered gold — earrings, a cuff, and a thin chain at minimum
  • Hair worn up elongates the silhouette and lets the kaftan's neckline speak
  • A small embellished clutch in gold or ivory completes the look
  • Avoid heavy contouring — the kaftan's elegance is in its softness, and makeup should follow that lead

Occasion 2: Eid Al Fitr & Eid Al Adha

What the occasion demands: Joy, colour, family. Eid dressing in the UAE is a considered affair — photographs will be taken, visits will be made to multiple family homes, and the outfit will be seen across a full day that begins in the morning and ends late at night.

How to style it: Eid calls for a kaftan that is celebratory in colour but comfortable enough to wear for twelve hours across a series of visits. This is where fabric choice becomes critical.

Maison Arabelle's Korean silk kaftans are specifically suited to this demand. Silk regulates body temperature in a way that synthetic fabrics cannot — it stays cool in the morning heat and feels substantial enough for air-conditioned interiors in the afternoon. For Eid, choose a colour with energy — rose, emerald, deep gold, or lilac — and let the fabric do the rest.

Styling notes:

  • Apply your fragrance to pulse points before dressing — silk holds scent beautifully
  • Flat embellished sandals over heels for Eid visits — you will be sitting, standing, and moving across multiple settings
  • Keep accessories unified in one metal — mixing gold and silver dilutes the intentionality of the look
  • A light silk headscarf in a complementary tone photographs beautifully and adds a layer of formality for morning prayers

Occasion 3: The Dubai Brunch

What the occasion demands: Ease, style, conversation. The Friday brunch is a Dubai institution — a several-hour affair at a hotel or restaurant that sits somewhere between lunch and a social event. The dress code is loosely smart casual, but in practice, the women who dress best at Dubai brunches dress with intention, not effort.

How to style it: The kaftan is an underused brunch outfit and one of the best. It photographs well in natural light, it is comfortable across a long seated lunch, and it reads as considered without being overdressed.

For a brunch setting, choose a kaftan in a lighter colourway and minimal embellishment — the occasion is relaxed enough that heavy embroidery tips into formal territory. A linen or lightweight silk kaftan in ivory, sage, or dusty rose works well.

Styling notes:

  • Wear it with flat leather sandals or low heeled mules — the kaftan's length and movement look best when the footwear does not compete
  • Sunglasses worn on arrival and removed inside signal effortless confidence
  • A structured tote rather than an evening bag — the practicality of the bag should match the practicality of the occasion
  • Minimal jewellery: one statement piece rather than multiple layers

Occasion 4: The Mall & Everyday Dubai

What the occasion demands: Ease, modesty, appropriateness. Day-to-day dressing in Dubai — whether in a mall, a café, or a casual meeting — requires modesty without formality. The kaftan navigates this better than almost any other garment.

How to style it: For everyday wear, the kaftan works best in solid colours or subtle prints, in breathable fabrics that move well in both the heat outside and the air conditioning inside. A shorter kaftan — midi length — works for casual settings where a full floor-length silhouette feels too formal.

The Charlotte Off-White Abaya by Maison Arabelle is one of the most wearable pieces in this context. Its off-white tone is neutral without being stark, its cut is relaxed enough for movement, and its simplicity means it can be dressed up or down entirely through accessories. Worn simply with flat sandals and a crossbody bag for a mall visit, or elevated with gold jewellery and heeled mules for a business casual lunch — it adapts to the context without requiring the wearer to change.

Styling notes:

  • Off-white and ivory tones photograph cleanly and read as elevated even in casual contexts
  • A single gold cuff and stud earrings are enough jewellery for a daytime look
  • Carry a compact tote that fits a laptop or documents if the day includes any work element
  • Flat sandals in tan or nude extend the leg line under a floor-length silhouette

Occasion 5: The Family Gathering & Home Visit

What the occasion demands: Comfort, modesty, warmth. In Arab culture, the home visit — whether a regular family gathering or a more formal occasion like a condolence visit or a celebration — is one of the most common social situations. Dress should be modest and respectful without being stiff.

How to style it: This is where the kaftan's original purpose reasserts itself. Loose, flowing, comfortable, and modest — the kaftan was designed for exactly this context. Choose a mid-weight fabric and a colour that reads as respectful for the occasion. For celebratory gatherings, colours with warmth — rose gold, peach, emerald. For more formal or religious occasions, navy, deep plum, or black.

Styling notes:

  • Remove shoes at the door — choose footwear that comes off easily without disrupting the look
  • Keep fragrance moderate in intimate home settings
  • A small gift or date box carried alongside a structured clutch is a complete entrance

Occasion 6: Travel from the UAE

What the occasion demands: Comfort across hours, modesty across cultures, ease at customs. The UAE is a hub for long-haul travel — women regularly fly to London, Paris, Beirut, and Casablanca from Dubai. The kaftan is one of the best travel garments in existence, though it is rarely discussed in that context.

How to style it: A floor-length silk kaftan worn on a flight arrives unwrinkled because silk does not crease the way cotton or linen does. It is comfortable for long periods of sitting, it meets modesty requirements across multiple cultures, and it looks polished enough on arrival to go directly into a meeting or a family home.

Styling notes:

  • Pack a thin cashmere or wool wrap for cabin temperature — it doubles as a blanket and a shoulder cover
  • Wear flat slip-on shoes that pass through security without stopping
  • A minimal makeup look that can be refreshed in the airplane bathroom — the kaftan does the work, the face should be low-maintenance

A Final Note on Fabric

Everything above assumes the right fabric. A kaftan in polyester or a synthetic blend will not move, breathe, or photograph the way the occasions above require. The reason Maison Arabelle sources silk from Korea and linen from India specifically — rather than using local or synthetic alternatives — is that the fabric is where the garment either succeeds or fails.

Korean silk has a particular quality of drape: it falls with weight and fluidity simultaneously, which means a kaftan cut from it moves with the body rather than around it. Indian linen breathes in a way that makes it genuinely comfortable in the Gulf heat, rather than simply appearing modest.

When choosing a kaftan for any of the occasions above, buy the fabric first. The rest follows.
